USING POPULAR FICTION TO INCORPORATE COMMON CORE
Every book can be the platform for probing questions and lesson plans. The book can be a link between student achievement, cultural values and constructive use of the Internet.
The resource I have constructed is a series of “station lessons” based on my mystery series. What I have proposed can be a template for any book of fiction. The lessons may be used together or singly. The teacher introduction includes information regarding standards and cooperative learning strategies, including web sites. The format of the lessons is up to the individual needs of the teacher and students.
The subjects covered include history, geography, forensic science, earth science math, reading vocabulary, speaking, and writing. All lessons involve cooperative learning, and interactive student centered activities, reflecting Understanding by Design. All lessons require use of the Internet. Websites are suggested and included. Note: Websites change over time. Check before using.
I hope you enjoy incorporating these ideas into your teaching.
